Succulent Gardens and a Tasty Libation

I know.
You aren't used to seeing plants on Happily Edible After. It's all good. These lovely succulents deserve their own post! I'm in love with these gorgeous dish gardens I created with Kurt from Southeast Succulents last weekend. When I saw that he was hosting a succulent container garden workshop, I nearly squealed with joy.
P.S. {There's a fun summertime recipe waiting for you at the end.}

Kurt Straudt is the owner of Southeast Succulents and his enthusiasm for succulents is contagious. In the workshop, he introduced us to succulent varietals and shared how to grow and care for them. Here he is demonstrating how to build a garden, keeping color, texture, and height in mind.

It was inspiring to see all the different containers that the other workshop participants brought. One woman even planned on creating a large succulent garden in her stone birdbath!
Honestly, I had such a great time. Picking out my plants, digging up the soil, arranging them in the dishes, and finally placing the rocks on top.
I got lost in the present moment....the best place to be.
Here's a sweet one from another participant with an amazing pot.

Here are a few more of gardens I made and took home to my patio.....Happy, Happy, Happy.

So, I want to give a big shout out to Kurt and Southeast Succulents. What a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon. If you live in the area, I hope you'll take advantage of his talents and come take a workshop. Just go to their Facebook page to see upcoming happenings and for lots more inspiration.

I did promise a recipe. It's a libation in fact.
Jay and I have been threatening to get out the Vitamix and make an adult beverage. And with the warm summer days upon us.... time for a little margarita madness! Enjoy.

Whole Fruit Margarita
Serves about 4

Adapted from Vitamix

1/4 cup filtered water
6 ounces tequila
2 ounces Grand Marnier (we used Cointreau)
1 orange, peeled, chunked
1 lemon, peeled, chunked
1 lime, peeled, chunked
1/4 cup sugar
5-6 cups ice cubes

Put all ingredients into the Vitamix (or other high-powered blender) in the order listed. Secure lid.
Turn on machine and increase speed quickly up to 10.
Set on high. Blend for 45 seconds, using tamper as needed.
Pour into glasses and put your feet up.

  1. I can't tell you how much I am digging on those plants (as I was the minute you posted the one on Facebook!) I have got to figure out how to get to one of his classes. I'm great at gardening but my indoors plants are really lacking in life. Great job-I love them! (and the margarita!)

    1. Thanks Janet! You definitely need to get down there for a workshop. It is such a blast and the possibilities are endless (think great gift idea too!). Cheers and take good care.
